"The President’s priorities

DEMETRIS Christofias placed emphasis on two main issues in his inaugural speech before the House of Representatives yesterday.

First, he pledged to strive hard to revive the peace process for a just and functional settlement reunifying the island, safeguarding human rights but also ensuring the political equality of the two communities in a federal Cyprus.

This should result in the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops and the demilitarisation of the island. It is not an easy task and he knows it.

Second, he promised to work to bring unity on the home front, mainly through consensus and the proper functioning of the National Council.

These will be his two priorities, he said.

We believe President Christofias is sincere in his objectives.

Now it is time for him to deliver on his pledges. Because this may be the last chance for Cyprus, facing the spectre of partition.

The parties in his government alliance as well as the Opposition should give him all the assistance he deserves in his noble quest."
