By no means did I want to call Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis “the best mediator for Erdogan” in Europe. However, it must be mentioned that he fell short in his duties and the “best man” of Erdogan! I do not know exactly what happened and I do not want to make any guess either, but apparently Mr. K.C. does not approve of the traditional song “you can get yourself a new love, but you cannot forget the old one…” So, now that he is “in love” with Erdogan, he has no eyes for the… Cypriot girl!
When C.K. visited Cyprus lately, we reminded him of the heavy burden of his name, the afflictions that Cypriot Hellenism still suffers, 45 years after his uncle Konstantinos Karamanlis signing the agreements in Zurich and London. We reminded him that we find those agreements, which his uncle had signed, as the root of all evil Cypriot Hellenism suffers. We expressed our hopes to him, in view of the European Council, that he would follow and adopt such a stance that would associate his name with a historic moment for Cyprus on the one hand and would alleviate the pain from the wounds in the memory of the Greek Cypriots with respect to all the things that his uncle Konstantinos Karamanlis has been blamed about. We were tragically misled. He is also to blame about the slender and unreal positive outcomes for Cyprus. It is not an exaggeration to say that while he was fighting to get Turkey date to open accession negotiations, Ankara sent combat aircrafts to fly over Greek islands.
Now, why they did not fly over Athens, that’s another story. Let’s find consolation in the frank speech of Mr. Costis Stefanopoulos. “If Europe”, Mr. Stefanopoulos said, “wants to play the role that suits it, it should change tactics and policy… Europe does not negotiate, it has its principles, which imposes everywhere”.
Nevertheless, could a speech save the dignity of a nation? At least, it sets negative impressions to rights."
