EU prepares 12 mln euro aid package for n.Cyprus

BRUSSELS, May 27 (Reuters) - The European Commission is preparing a 12 million euro ($14.18 million) aid package for northern Cyprus as well as easier access for its exports to the European Union and is likely to approve both next week, EU sources said on Tuesday.

The EU has already accepted the internationally-recognised Greek Cypriot part of the island as a member from May 2004, but hopes of admitting a united Cyprus were dashed earlier this year when United Nations-sponsored talks collapsed.

The aid will support the Turkish Cypriot economy and is meant to encourage rapprochement between the Turkish and Greek sides and help northern Cyprus integrate into Europe.

"It is likely to be adopted (when the Commission meets on June 3)," an EU source told Reuters.

Cyprus has been divided along ethnic lines since 1974 when Turkey invaded the poorer northern third of the island in response to a Greek Cypriot coup backed by the military junta then ruling Greece.
