The Turkish candidacy to the EU depends on a solution to the Cyprus issue

Pressures on Turkey

Brussels: The solution to the Cyprus issue is one of the prerequisites for the promotion of Turkey’s candidacy for accession to the European Union, stated on Wednesday before the Plenary of the European Parliament, the Plenary rapporteur for the motion for the accession of Ankara, Dutch member of the European Parliament Ari Oostlander.

In the discussion, which took place on the basis of the rapporteur’s report, both the Greek Presidency and the competent Commissioner Gunter Verheugen called Turkey to concentrate its efforts to the solution of the Cyprus issue.

The representative of the Presidency, deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, Tassos Yiannitsis, mentioned that the Annan plan remains on the negotiating table and the EU supports the resumption of the efforts of the UN Secretary-General.

The implicated parties and the Turkish-Cypriot community, in particular, should do their best, Mr Yiannitsis said, adding that the government of the Republic of Cyprus has showed good will for the continuation of the process in the hope that something might be accomplished by May 2004."
