400 Turkish Cypriots employed in south since April

APPROXIMATELY 400 Turkish Cypriots are currently employed in the government-controlled areas, the government said yesterday.

Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Iacovos Keravnos, said there had been a gradual increase in the number of Turkish Cypriots seeking employment across the Green Line since the checkpoints had been opened in April.

Since then, approximately 400 Turkish Cypriots were registered with the Social Insurance Fund as having found jobs in the government-controlled areas.

Keravnos said dozens of Turkish Cypriots applied to district employment offices, and many of them were found jobs, mainly in construction site and service-oriented business work."
