Tassos to Talat: pot calling kettle black

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday the Turkish Cypriot side's complaints over the expropriation of Turkish Cypriot land in the south of the island was a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Papadopoulos was commenting on a letter sent on Friday to United Nations Secretary-general Kofi Annan by Turkish Cypriot opposition Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat, calling for an investigation into expropriations in the south since 1974.

In his letter Talat said that the government has been expropriating the remaining Turkish Cypriot property left in the south. Talat said he was concerned about "this act of nationalisation" being carried out against Turkish Cypriot properties in the south before a resumption of intercommunal talks.

He said this was clearly aimed at depriving the Turkish Cypriot people of their property.

"It would be greatly beneficial if you call this issue to the attention of the Greek Cypriot administration and assume an initiative to stop the aforementioned, discriminative expropriation campaign," Talat's letter to Annan said.

Papadopoulos said he had not read Talat's letter, but what made an impression on him was that the Turkish Cypriot side could talk about injustice against them on the property issue "when Turkish troops control 37 per cent of the island"."
