Euro entry 'strictly economic'
"THE accession of Cyprus to the Eurozone will be judged exclusively on economic considerations, top EU leaders said this week."

"THE accession of Cyprus to the Eurozone will be judged exclusively on economic considerations, top EU leaders said this week.

The statements were sparked by rumours of efforts by some governments, particularly Britain, to include political considerations favouring the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state.

"We have clear criteria for the European Currency Union, and these clear criteria have to be applied to everybody. There must not be a political judgement. There are clear juridical criteria, which are based on economic and financial facts,'' Hans Gert Poettering, the President of the EU Parliament, said to The Cyprus Weekly.

His statement was backed by the leaders of other political groups as well as the Vice President of the European Central Bank Lucas Papademos.

He said that "on the European Central Bank there are clear rules that must be applied, and, as long as they have not been changed, they must be applied."

The president of the EU Parliament's largest political group, the Christian Democrats/EPP, French MEP Joseph Daul said: "It is wrong to use political manoeuvres on the eurozone and it would be unfortunate if different standards were applied to EU members.''"
