Good riddance, Blair!
Regretfully, Blair’s promise turned out to be nothing but hot air, not to say deliberately deceitful, since his efforts, as the man generally regarded as the author of the disastrous Annan Plan, tended to achieve the opposite, forcing the vast majority of Greek Cypriots to reject it overwhelmingly in the special referendum.

"TONY Blair has been at the helm of the British government for a decade after winning an unprecedented three elections for the Labour Party, which naturally regards him as the best leader it has had for a generation or more,

Tens of thousands of Greek Cypriots living in the United Kingdom voted for Blair in his constituency, and helped maintain the Labour Party in office all these years by backing other Labour MPs.

They did so believing Blair’s pre-election promises that he would do everything possible to solve the Cyprus problem and to satisfy the just expectations of the Greek Cypriots for the reunification of the island, the ending of the Turkish occupation and the return of the Greek Cypriot refugees.

It is only natural that his departure will not be lamented by Greek Cypriots whose reaction is more likely to be "Good riddance!"

It is really incomprehensible to the people of Cyprus that this man – the leader of the country which is a guarantor of Cyprus independence – instead of promoting the settlement of the problem of the Cyprus refugees on the basis of the numerous Security Council resolutions pressing for the return, drafted the disgraceful Plan that made their refugee status permanent!

It is equally incomprehensible that this politician, who deliberately did nothing to solve the problem of Cyprus and its refugees on the basis of the numerous Security Council resolutions, as well as the European Court judgements, has now been appointed to promote a settlement of the Palestinian problem.

How can this man who so blatantly ignored the just rights of the Greek Cypriot refugees be entrusted with working for the rights of the Palestinian refugees, and by extension the implementation of the Security Council resolutions that make the same demands in the case of the Palestinian refugees as in the case of Cyprus, that is simply an end of the foreign occupation and the return of the ethnically-cleansed refugees?

Poor Palestinian fellow refugee brothers, do not raise your hopes that this particular politician will do anything to help you regain your usurped rights!

His policies to date and close friendship, not to say attachment, to Uncle Sam, make this most unlikely!"
