| Letter sent to the Evening Standard of London on 21 May 2006. Sir Your comment that the north of Cyprus is controlled by Turkey and the south is controlled by Greece is at best ridiculous and at worst a lie. (ES Travel, Evening Standard, 20 May 2005 p60-61) How can you liken the free areas of the island to the occupied north? The government of Cyprus, which controls the free areas is run by the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, unlike the occupied north which is controlled by the generals of Turkey. While you recently celebrated the liberation of Jersey, what a shame that you celebrate the occupation of the north of Cyprus through the promotion of tourism. You forget too quickly, for the appeasement of Turkey, how thousands of Cypriots sacrificed their lives for the liberation of western Europe. As for your comment that occupied Cyprus is quiet well what a surprise. The place has been ethnically cleansed.
