Dear President-Elect Obama

On behalf of our members, Lobby for Cyprus would like to congratulate you on your victory in the US Presidential election.

Your message for change has clearly been welcomed in the US. However, this message has travelled far and has also struck a chord for many people around the world. There has been a particular resonance for the Republic of Cyprus and Greek Cypriots, of which many live in the UK, and other parts of the world. They have endured over 34 years of life as refugees and maintain a strong desire and wish to return to their homes and lands.

However, there seems to be little sign of any will on the part of Turkey to comply with either International Law or United Nations Resolutions that call for the withdrawal of Turkey’s occupation army from the Republic of Cyprus and the return of all refugees to their homes and land. In fact, the number of troops making up Turkey’s occupation army in Cyprus is greater than the number of US troops currently stationed in Afghanistan.

It is, therefore, our hope that American foreign policy vis-à-vis Cyprus will alter and that pressure is applied to Turkey to recognise, respect and adhere to the rule of Law. For too many years, Turkey has been appeased and “rewarded” for its crimes against the Republic of Cyprus, with total disregard for the human rights of the Cypriot people. We look forward to the United States, with Barack Obama as President, to change the approach towards Turkey and ensure that finally, it ends its illegal occupation of the Republic of Cyprus and allows the Cypriot people to build the future of their country, without fear, oppression and discrimination.

Please accept our best wishes for the difficult times that lay ahead.
