We have all been reminded once again of Jack Straw's utter contempt for the Rule of Law by his recent comments on Cyprus. As a former Foreign Secretary and Minister for Justice he will know full well that Greek Cypriots are not prepared to give up their legal entitlement to property that they still own. He will know that the UN, the European Court Human Rights, the European Commission, the European Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal in cases such as Loizidou v Turkey and Apostolides v Orams have time and time again asserted that the only legitimate property owners of Greek Cypriot owned property in the illegally Turkish occupied north of Cyprus are those Greek Cypriots that were brutally ethnically cleansed from them and have ordered that compensation and damages be paid to for the trespass to their property. So why would property owners follow his lead and surrender their rights now? If he and others genuinely want a lasting solution in Cyprus perhaps they should craft a solution that respects rather than tramples on legal rights. Given Mr Straw's legal background his comments are all the more lamentable and hopefully more of an attempt to remind us that he still exists than a reasoned legal analysis.
