House of Commons debate
The Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Kurdish and Greek Cypriot Genocides and the Politics of Denialism

Discussion at the House of Commons on Monday 21 July between 6 and 7.30pm. The discussion concerns the central themes of Des Fernandes' new book entitled 'The Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Kurdish and Greek Cypriot Genocides and the Politics of Denialism.'

The event is sponsored by David Drew MP and will take place in the Grand Committee Room of the House.

The intention of the discussion is to highlight the attempts to deny the various genocides committed against Turkey's ethnic minorities or near neighbours during the last 90 years and the reasons for these denials.

There will be speakers from all the affected ethnic groups including Lobby for Cyprus.

Rally for Cyprus
Annual demonstration

"Rally for freedom and human rights in Cyprus. Join and demand with us Turkish troops and settlers out of Cyprus".

Meet at 2.45pm outside the Turkish Embassy, Belgrave Square and then start to march to Trafalgar Square at 3pm. March arrives at Trafalgar Square at 4.30pm.

Lobby for Cyprus seminar
The genocide in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus
Speaker: Des Fernandes

The presentation will include a critique of the Annan Plan, written within the context of a genocide debate and will apply the concepts and definitions of Lemkin, who first used the word genocide, and the UN 1948 Genocide Convention to the polices and practices that Greek Cypriots have been subjected to in occupied Cyprus.

Des Fernandes is the author of 'The Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Kurdish and Greek Cypriot Genocides, and the Politics of Denialism' (Apec, Stockholm, 2008), 'Colonial Genocides in Turkey, Kenya and Goa' (Apec, Stockholm (forthcoming) and 'the Kurdish and Armenian Genocides: from Censorship and Denial to Recognition" (Apec, Stockholm 2007).

Des was formerly a senior lecturer in Human Geography and 'the Geography of Genocide at De Montfort University, Bedford. He has written exclusively on the subject of genocide and articles have appeared in journals that include 'Genocide Studies and Prevention' (the journal of the International Association of Genocide Scholars), "Armenian Forum" and 'Variant: Cross Currents in Culture'.

Picket for Cyprus
To condemn unilateral declaration of illegal pseudo-state in occupied Cyprus
Turkish embassy, 43 Belgravia Square, London SW3

6pm-9pm

On 15 November 1983 the illegal regime in occupied Cyprus declared 'independence'. This was condemned worldwide and by UN resolutions such as 541 which states the declaration "legally invalid and calls for its withdrawal".

Join us in calling for the reunification of Cyprus and an end to the continued violation of the human rights of the people of Cyprus.
